Road Closures And Parking For SPAR Women’s Challenge

Participants and their supporters of the Durban SPAR Women’s 10/5km Challenge that takes place on Sunday 23 June around Jonsson Kings Park Stadium and Moses Mabhida stadium precinct are reminded to arrive early and plan their route to the race, and where they will park. As always there are a number of road closures that will affect access into the area.
The 10km race starts at 08:00 and the 5km at 09:30 on Masabalala Yengwa Avenue, outside Jonsson Kings Park Stadium outer fields.
Road Closures for Sunday 23 June 2019
From 02:00
• Snell Parade between Athlone Drive and the main entrance to Suncoast Casino.
• Battery Beach Road.
• Masabalala Yengwa Avenue between Smiso Nkwanyana Road and Isaiah Ntshangase Road.
• The South bound lane of Masabalala Yengwa Avenue between Smiso Nkwanyana Road and KE Masinga Road.
• Kingsmead Way and Eden Gardens Crescent
From 04:00
• KE Masinga Road (the 2 left lanes) between Eden Gardens Crescent and Masabalala Yengwa Avenue.
• Masabalala Yengwa Avenue between Argyle Road and Smiso Nkwanyana Road
• Somtseu Road at Masabalala Yengwa Avenue
From 06:00
• The West bound lane of Athlone Drive between Snell Parade and Masabalala Yengwa Avenue
• The off ramp from the M4 (Ruth First Highway) to Athlone Drive (in both directions)
Road Openings
• Roads will be opened as soon as possible after the last competitor has left that portion of the route and the cleaning team has ensured that there is no litter.
• Most roads will be reopened by 11:30.
FREE EVENT PARKING
• Access to the Parking on Jonsson Kings Park fields KP3, 4 and 5 will be via Smiso Nkwanyana Road into Jacko Jackson Drive. Note – once this area is full access will be limited to emergency and official vehicles only.
• Access to Jonsson Kings Park fields KP9 and KP10 will be via Umgeni Road to Isaiah Ntshangase Road and through the Virgin Active Parking area onto the fields.
• Parking on these fields is free.
ACCESS
• Access and egress to the Durban Country Club will be from the M4 (Ruth First Highway) Please note that Isaiah Ntshangase Road will be closed at (1) the entrance to Moses Mabhida Stadium and the entrance to Durban Country Club. There will be no through traffic at the intersection with Masabalala Yengwa Road.
• Access to the parking area at Sunkist will be by way of a stop/go system managed by Durban Metro Police.
• Access to People’s Park will be via Argyle Road onto a single lane of Masabalala Yengwa Avenue to Battery Beach Road intersection. Egress from People’s Park will be past Durmail using the back gate to Somtseu Road (Sasol Service Station near the station).
“It makes it so much easier for participants to plan their routes knowing which roads will be closed, and where they can park. We encourage people to access the parking and road closures maps on the website and social media pages,” says Race Director Brad Glasspoole.
Entries can be done online via the race website until 17 June for credit card and debit card payments. A manual entry option is available, subject to the limit of 15,000 not having been reached, at race registration which takes place at Hall 6 at the Durban Exhibition Centre on: Thursday, 20 June and Friday, 21 June from 10:00 to 17:00 and Saturday, 22 June from 10:00 to 15:00. All entrants will receive a promo bag at race registration.

Brenda Mtambo to entertain at SPAR Women’s Challenge

Jonsson Kings Park Stadium: Sunday 23 June

This year, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the SPAR Women’s Challenge 10/5km, much-loved ‘soul sister’ Brenda Mtambo will take to the stage to entertain the crowds on Sunday 23 June at Jonsson Kings Park Stadium outer fields.

Mtambo is known for her powerful, soulful voice, having sung with the Multi Award Winner Gospel Group ‘’ Joyous Celebration’. She has worked closely on projects, tours and recordings with the likes of Lira, Judith Sephuma, Brian Thusi to name a few. In 2013 she released her debut album titled ‘inspired’ and as a result of the album’s success she has been invited to many festivals and events such as the Jazz on the Lake for Joburg Art Festival and the Durban Jazz Festival.

Ixesha Lami is Mtambo’s first single off her latest album “So Much More” which is described as “not only an anthem for women, but a song for everyone who’s just had enough of something that’s been working against their joy.”

‘So Much More’ is a departure from Mtambo’s gospel roots, allowing her to express her own distinctive Afro soul voice. The success of this album saw her being nominated against heavy weights in the category Best Urban Jazz and Best Female in the MMA16 Awards, SAMA 23 Nominee: Best R&B/Soul/Reggae Album SAMA 23 Nominee: Best Produced Album (Sipho Sithole) SAFTA Nominee: Best Afro Soul Album.

Mtambo promises to get the crowds moving and grooving from the stage at the finish line of this year’s 30th edition. Participants are encouraged to remain behind after the race, and enjoy the entertainment, as well as the official prize giving and the lucky draw where they will have a chance to win some fabulous prizes.

Applications open for JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience 2019

Fringe and Youth Fringe

Applications are now open for the Fringe and Youth Fringe of the 16th JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience presented by the Centre for Creative Arts from 27 August to 8 September at the Elizabeth Sneddon and Open Air Theatres at Howard College Campus.

Professional, experimental and up-coming choreographers and dance companies are invited to apply for participation on the JOMBA! Fringe programme which takes place on 4 September.  There is space for a maximum of 8 works on this year’s fringe each 15 minutes long, and applicants are accepted based on first and foremost on the detail and clarity of the information supplied on the application form, and the suitability of the application in relation to the vision of JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience.

The Fringe event comes with a “pick-of-the-Fringe” award Fringe, with a nominal cash honorarium and an invitation for the choreographer to present work on the JOMBA! platforms the following year. (Terms and conditions apply).

The JOMBA! Youth Fringe is open to dancers under the age of 16 years old.  It is a support initiative for the various ‘Dance Development’ projects operating in our province (KZN) and provides a space to celebrate our up-and-coming generation of young contemporary dancers and dance practitioners.

The JOMBA! Youth Fringe has access to limited resources, and therefore applicants should be aware that the event takes place during the day with no lights, but there is sound, and stage management provided. The event, which takes place on Sunday, 1 September at 2pm is free to participants and the public.

Works submitted for consideration should not exceed a 6-minute duration, and the selection committee welcomes contemporary, traditional and popular dance forms onto its platform. (Terms and conditions apply).

Felixton College played out of their boots as they defended their Northern KZN Coastal Regional title in the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge on Saturday 18 May at Grantleigh College’s astro.

Felixton took on hosts, Grantleigh College in an energetic final that ended with the visitors going 3 goals up. Grantleigh started off strong, earning a short corner 3 minutes into the game with the first real chance at goals. Felixton’s back line were up for the task, not allowing the ball anywhere near the danger zone. 

Midway through the final, Kavilay Naidoo had a superb solo run down the right, but didn’t get beyond the Felixton 22. Netting the first two goals for the red team, Cate Oxley finally broke the deadlock with 7.56 minutes left of play. 40 seconds later, Felixton were again knocking on the door, with a shot fired in, pounding the back board – but on-the-spot umpire, Mari-Lee Visser deemed the shot to have been hit outside the circle, disallowing the attempt. 

Not letting the disappoint get to them, Felixton responded with a short corner. The ball was sent to the top of the field, cleverly the Felixton players skillfully moved the ball around when the ball eventually found Oxley, who had time to slap in her team’s second. 

Delivering the final blow, Josie Picton took the scoreline out of Grantleigh’s reach when she scored the third and final goal with 3 and a half minutes still on the clock. 

Going into the finals, Felixton’s keeper Rhaiya Naidu (18) stated that she hadn’t touched the ball the entire tournament, and her fantastic defenders prevented the ball from coming anywhere near the goals during the final, giving the matric pupil no work the entire day.

Leading up to the finals, Felixton – who finished on top of their pool, took on eShowe High School in the first semi-final. 3.57 into the game, Felixton opened their account during a short corner, where Captain Aphiwe Nene calmly slapped the ball in. Shortly after, Josie Picton who was camped right on the post, bravely positioned her stick and decisively diverted a rogue shot from Beth Oxley, who cannoned the ball from the top of the circle. Picton, was again well placed during a short corner as she injected the ball only to receive the ball from the top of the D, and knocked in Felixton’s third. As the clock wound down, star player Kayla Janse van Vuuren got her team’s fourth goal and a place in the finals. 

In the second semi-final, Grantleigh were made to work hard for their place in the final, when they took on Richard’s Bay Christian School. After 7 minutes, Grantleigh were awarded a short corner. The ball went to the top of the circle, dodging the first wave, the Grantleigh attack had plenty of time as there was no second wave charging down on them, the ball moved right, then across the goal mouth where Minya Geyser edged the ball across the line for the first goal. 

Grantleigh continued peppering the other goals with countless attacks but a Herculean effort from Richard’s Bay’s last stand, Lebogang Tlou who stood solid in her goals, only to remarkably let in 2 goals. Standing tall, the matric pupil had to face off 3 penalty flicks, the first two didn’t make it past her but Beth van Onselen found the right corner with her low flick, giving the home team a 2 nil win.

The Umpire for the Day award went to Visser who was representing Felixton. The young whistle blower was invited to officiate at the Grand Finals in 2016, and has been impressing as she is growing in confidence.

Wrapping up this year’s regionals, Felixton is the final team to earn a ticket to the Grand Finals that takes place on 20 & 21 July at St Mary’s DSG in Kloof. They join St Anne’s College (PMB North), Epworth (PMB Central), newcomer Crawford La Lucia (DBN North), Durban Girls’ College (DBN Central), Amanzimtoti High School (DBN South), Kokstad College (Southern KZN),  Ferrum High School (Northern KZN), Wartburg Kirchdorf (uMvoti, uThukela and uMzinyathi) and St Mary’s (Highway).

Wrapping up the regional tournaments in the ninth year of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Tournament, teams from around Richard’s Bay and eShowe get their chance to take to the turf at Grantleigh College on Saturday 18 May in the hopes of representing the Northern KZN Coastal Regional at the Grand Finals.

Back to defend their title, the surprise package of the 2018 tournament, Felixton College which has proudly lifted the trophy once, joins four-times champions - Empangeni High School, Richards Bay Christian School, John Ross College and newcomer to the tournament Curro Mt Richmore in Pool A. In Pool B are hosts, Grantleigh College, who have also been crowned regional winner three times, St Catherine’s School, Mandini Academy and eShowe High School.

Nine teams will be participating in the games that will follow the same format as the other regionals, where a win earns the team 4 points, a draw with goals - 2 points, a goalless draw 1 point and a loss zero points. The 16 pool games last 20 minutes, thereafter the tournament progresses to a cross pool play off for the top two teams. Depending on the results in the semi-finals, if drawn, the game rolls into the highly dramatic penalty shootout.

This Regional will mark the 98th overall tournament leading up to the Grand Finals that will take place at St Mary’s DSG. The top team from each regional will then meet for an action-packed weekend over 20 and 21 July.

The winner of this regional will be joining nine teams that have already secured a place at the Grand Finals. Teams that have earned a spot are St Anne’s College (PMB North), Epworth (PMB Central), newcomer Crawford La Lucia (DBN North), Durban Girls’ College (DBN Central), Amanzimtoti High School (DBN South), Kokstad College (Southern KZN),  Ferrum High School (Northern KZN), Wartburg Kirchdorf (uMvoti, uThukela and uMzinyathi) and St Mary’s (Highway).

Reclaiming their regional title, Wartburg Kirchdorf raised the trophy from the uMvoti, uThukela and uMzinyathi Regional in the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge that took place at Greytown High School on Saturday 11 May.

Wartburg have dominated this region, having been previously crowned five times, and ended their day with an impressive five victories as they kept a clean scoresheet not allowing any goals against them.

Wartburg took on one of the surprise packages, the well-structured and determined team from Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg who played strong hockey throughout the day. They earned 11 points overall, with two wins against defending champs, Greytown High School and Estcourt High School, a two all draw against Domino Servite and a goalless draw against Wembley, and going down 1-0 against Wartburg.

In the regional final, ten minutes into the game Wartburg’s Lise-Lea Engelbrecht surged into the Hermannsburg circle, swerving left and right before offloading the ball towards the p spot, where a lurking Luthando Makhaye knocked the ball in beyond the goalkeeper’s attempts of Kei Blackburn.

Responding on the other end, Hermannsburg’s Ntando Mpungose managed to sneak the ball across the line in a crowded goal area after a magnificent run down the field, beating the pads of opposition goalkeeper Andiswa Ndaba.

At full time, Hermannsburg, who for the first time in the history of this regional were making an appearance in the regional final, held their own and not allowing any of Wartburg’s attacks to amount to any more goals.

Three players from each team stepped up to the spot in the deciding penalty shootout. Slotting in for Wartburg, Lise-Lea Engelbrecht opened her team’s account, followed by Amahle Zondi who on entering the circle, rocketed in her shot left of Blackburn. The four other attempts, all three of Hermannsburg’s and the final Wartburg penalty all did not find the back of the box.

Umpire for the day was from host school, Greytown High School’s Stacey Wheeler.

Wartburg is the eighth team to earn a berth at the Grand Finals. They join St Anne’s College (PMB North), Epworth (PMB Central), newcomer Crawford La Lucia (DBN North), Durban Girls’ College (DBN Central), Amanzimtoti High School (DBN South), Kokstad College (Southern KZN), and Ferrum High School (Northern KZN).

The Highway Regional, which took place the day after this regional,  saw St Mary’s DSG claim the ninth spot at the Grand Finals. Only one tournament remains in this ten-region tournament, where teams from around Richard’s Bay and eShowe get their turn in the Northern KZN Coastal Regional that takes place at Grantleigh College this weekend.

The penultimate regional tips off at Thomas More College on Sunday 12 May where six teams from the Highway area will duel it out on the turf in the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge.
First up in this Highway Regional are defending champions, St Mary’s DSG and Curro Hillcrest, as they get the ball rolling in the first of fifteen round robin games at 8am.
This is one of the smaller regionals in this ten region tournament that travels the length-and-breadth of KwaZulu-Natal in the build up to the Grand Finals in July. Participating schools from this area are host school, Thomas More College together with Westville Girls’ High School, Hillcrest High School, Kloof High School, St Mary’s DSG and Curro Hillcrest. Five of the schools have competed in all nine of the years of this tournament, with newcomer Curro Hillcrest joining the teams four years ago.
Once all the round robin games are done and dusted, the regional final will take place between the two teams who are lying on top of the log. The gold medal game gets underway at 1.25pm followed by prize giving.
Only two teams have represented this area and advanced to the Grand Finals. St Mary’s DSG have dominated the Highway Regional with a total of seven regional victories, Westville Girls’ High School managed to break Saints domination earning the trophy in 2014.
Confirmed schools that already have tickets to the Grand Finals are St Anne’s College (PMB North), Epworth School (PMB Central), Crawford La Lucia (DBN North Regional), Durban Girls’ College (DBN Central Regional), Amanzimtoti High School (DBN South Regional), Kokstad College (Southern KZN Regional), Ferrum High School (Northern KZN) and the winners of the Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional Winner that takes place the day before the Highway Regional.
The last remaining regional travels to Grantleigh School on Sunday 19 May. Thereafter the 2019 tournament wraps up with all the regional winners converging at the Grand Finals which takes place at St Mary’s DSG on the weekend of 20 and 21 July.

Defending champs, Greytown High School will be hosting teams in the upcoming uMvoti, uThukela and uMzinyathi Regional for the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge on Saturday 11 May.

This region has produced four champions that have progressed to the Grand Finals in Durban each year. First time winning this regional, defending their title this year - Greytown High School managed to dethrone Wartburg Kirchdorf School who have dominated the area for five consecutive years from 2013. Prior to the Wartburg Kirchdorf era, Wembley and Ladysmith High School both hoisted the trophy.

Six teams will be kitted up and ready to take to the field, first up in this regional are defending champions, Greytown and Hermannsburg, as they get the ball rolling in the first of fifteen round robin games at 8am.

This is one of the smaller regionals in this ten region tournament that travels the length-and-breadth of KwaZulu-Natal in the build up to the Grand Finals in July. Participating schools from this area are host school and defending champs, Greytown High School together with Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg, Domino Servite, Escourt High School, Wartburg Kirchdorf and Wembley College.

Position in team: I mostly play right striker otherwise centre striker or right link
Colours/ honours for anything?: I have my honours for academics as well as half colours for both hockey and soccer

Awards for anything?: I have received awards for having made the UGU side for both hockey and soccer as well as awards for my academics.

What other sports do you play?
I also play soccer.

Are you in any provincial teams? 
Yes KZN soccer.

When did you start playing hockey? 
I've been playing hockey since Grade 1 when I was introduced to the sport at my school, Creston College.

What do you most enjoy about hockey? 
I love that it is a team sport that teaches you teamwork, patience and the importance of knowing when to rely on others to help you achieve your goals. Whilst playing the sport one is also given the opportunity to form new friendships.

Best bit of inspirational advice that you have received from your coaches?
The best advice I have received from my coaches is to never stop believing and to keep pushing yourself on the field. Other advice I have received is that a good player goes to where the ball is but that a great player sees and knows where the ball is going to end up and gets to that place.

What do you want to do after school?
I want to first take a gap year and travel and work overseas and thereafter study all while playing both hockey and soccer.

Away from school, what are your hobbies? 
I like to spend time with friends and watch movies. A lot of my time away from school involves matches and training.

What is your memory from last year’s finals? 
Unfortunately, our team didn’t qualify for quarter finals and this was particularly upsetting as we were so close; having had to participate in a shootout against Suid-Natal where we lost. The team was very heartbroken but recall the final matches as very evenly matched games.

Do you have a sporting role model?
I don’t have a specific role model but I instead look up to and admire my coaches as they help motivate me and improve my abilities and I aspire to reach their level of play.

Words you live by?
Be true to yourself and to stand up for what you believe in.

The sixth regional in the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge, the Southern KZN, heads to Creston College on Saturday 13 April.

Geographically, this is one of the biggest regionals, with six teams travelling from Scottburgh, Kokstad, Matatiele and iXopo joining four local south coast teams to participate in a spectacular ‘hockey-filled’ day.

The teams are host school Creston College, Kokstad College, Scottburgh High School, St Patrick’s College and Suid-Natal High School in Pool A and iXopo High School, King Edward High School, Port Shepstone High School, Southcity Christian School and St Monica’s High School.

This region has turned out three winners over its nine year history. The first team to ‘don’ the Southern KZN regional title was the feisty team from inland, Kokstad College, with two appearances in the 2011 and 2014 Grand Finals. They earned themselves a seventh and eighth spot overall out of the ten regions. Host school, Creston College has also represented the region twice in back-to-back appearances in 2012 and 2013. Creston ended up with a sixth spot in their first Grand Final and a fifth in their second.

Travelling the farthest is the gutsy team from King Edward High School in Matatiele. For the last four consecutive years, this team has topped the log. Faring well at the Grand Finals they have an eighth, two sixth places and a seventh in last year’s Grand Final.

The two ladies heading up the King Edward team, Coach and Manager Lizel du Randt and new Coach Tarryn McArthur said, “Our KEHS girls have an unbelievably positive, upbeat spirit this year. Our girls know that when their legs run out, they play with their hearts and this year we have loads of heart.”

The action will be split over two fields, with the first games seeing Creston going up against Scottburgh High, and on the second field Southcity taking on travelling team iXopo. Once all the pool games are complete, the semi finals will get underway, followed by positional games and the gold / silver game capping off a full day of hockey.

The winner of the Southern KZN Regional will join teams from around KZN at the Grand Finals taking place at St Mary’s DSG in Kloof on 20 and 21 July.

The regional winner will join other teams that have already got a ticket to the Grand Finals. They are St Anne’s (PMB North Regional), Epworth School (PMB Central Regional), Crawford La Lucia (DBN North Regional) and Durban Girls’ College (DBN Central Regional) and from last weekend Amanzimtoti High School (DBN South Regional).

Midway through the ninth year of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge, teams from the southern suburbs of Durban meet for the Durban South Regional at 3 Schools’ Trust Astro on Sunday 7 April.

Host for the fifth regional tournament, Amanzimtoti High School will welcome teams from Grosvenor Girls’ High School, Kingsway High School, Kuswag Hoërskool, New Forest High School, Queensburgh Girls’ High School, Queensburgh High School and Werda School.

Meeting on neutral territory, the eight teams will be divided up into two pools. In Pool A are Werda, Toti, and the two Queensburgh teams and in Pool B Kuswag, Kingsway, Grosvenor and New Forest.

At the blast of the first 20 minute whistle, Toti will lead the way as they take to the pitch to meet Werda. Following on, the second game of the day is an Amanzimtoti derby with the two neighbouring schools, Kingsway taking on Kuswag. The programme for the regional has 12 pool games, followed by five cross-pool games, kicking off with the first two semi-finals.

Four schools will have had appearances at all the nine Durban South Regionals: Toti, Kingsway, New Forest and Grosvenor. Both Kuswag and Werda have participated in all but one of the regionals. Queensburgh Girls’ High have had a regular presence over the last four years and Queensburgh High makes a welcome return having missed the last two years.

Two teams have represented this region at the Grand Finals – Kuswag was the first team to make it through to the Grand Finals in the inaugural tournament in 2011, where they finished ninth overall. A determined team from Amanzimtoti have been holding onto the title for the last four years. Their tally includes three tenth spots in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and an eighth in last year’s tournament.

Ten teams from around KZN will head to St Mary’s DSG in Kloof for the Grand Finals on 20 and 21 July. The winner of this region will join teams that have already earned their spot in July, they are St Anne’s (PMB North), Epworth School (PMB Central), Crawford La Lucia (DBN North) and Durban Girls’ College (DBN Central).

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is proud to present the 31st annual UKZN Jazz Jol on Saturday, April 6th, 2019. Traditionally scheduled for the 2nd half of the year, the event has been brought forward to accommodate a visit by Prof Darius Brubeck, who founded the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music, and which commemorates its 30th anniversary this year.

In another break from tradition, the funds generated from the Jol will be donated to the Durban chapter of Amnesty International, instead of the Ronnie Madonsela scholarship. This is an appropriate way to recognize the support of our local community for our student scholarship over these many years, and to thank them by donating the funds to newly-established chapters of Amnesty International at the UKZN School of Law, the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine, and 6 local schools to set them on the path, in their efforts to fight for human rights.

Besides Prof Brubeck, the concert will feature the UKZN Big Band as well as a host of Durban-based alumni, including Melvin Peters, Sazi Dlamini and SKOKIANA, Andile Yenana, Debbie and George Mari, Mfana Mlambo, and Natalie Rungan. Anchoring proceedings will be bassist Ildo Nandja, who will be visiting from the Netherlands, where he is currently registered for his Masters degree in Jazz Studies and drummers Riley Giandhari and Bruce Baker.

For one show only on Saturday the 23 March 2019, The Linda Vargas Flamenco Dance Company brings together international and local artists of the highest calibre for a performance entitled Latin Heat & Flamenco at the UKZN’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music.

Flamenco, in its purist form comprises of three elements: dance (baile), singing (cante) and guitar (guitarra). Latin Heat & Flamenco features dancing by the Linda Vargas Flamenco Dance Company with a return of our very special guest artist from Spain: Ramon Fernandez (son of Linda Vargas and Demi Fernandez and member of the company) who is currently making a name for himself dancing in Spain, brings his powerfully inimitable style to the evening. Ramon will be accompanied by the true flamenco “cante” (singing) of internationally acclaimed performer Domingo Ortega. Domingo was born in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain and his performance with Ramon is a coup for Durban audiences. Domingo grew up surrounded by flamenco and is regarded as one of Spain’s finest performers. He has toured with his own company since 1995 and continues to perform in Spain as well as around the world in countries such as Italy, Japan, Venezuela, Israel, and Russia, Senegal (where he has been named a citizen of honour). This will be his first performance as cantaor in South Africa.

Providing the music will be an awe inspiring line up of musicians of international acclaim. Flamenco Guitar maestro Demi Fernandez has spent many years living and performing in Flamenco Tablaos in Spain will and has appeared as leading flamenco guitarist with numerous South African and international Spanish Dance Companies. As resident guitarist for the Linda Vargas Flamenco Dance Company, he is joined by long time collaborator Neil Gonsalves on piano and Martin Sigamoney, (sax and flute) Bryan Stone, (percussion) Riley Giandhari (drums) and Micale Maduray (bass), who provide the musical soul that infuses the entire performance in not only the dance but also some awe inspiring Latin, Jazz and Flamenco fusion musical items.

With their high level of performance innovation, creativity and professionalism the Linda Vargas Flamenco Dance Company, who celebrated their 35th Anniversary in 2018, continue to build a loyal and extensive following of Spanish dance in South Africa – this once off performance in the intimacy of UKZN’s Jazz Centre is sure to be the hottest ticket in town.

Latin Heat and Flamenco runs at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music on the UKZN’s Howard College for one performance only on Saturday the 23rd March 2019 at 7pm. The only team to keep their 100% record, Durban Girls’ College took the honours for the ninth time at the Durban Central Regional of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge on Sunday 10 March.

It was not all plain sailing for College who met host school, Durban Girls’ High School in the regional final. The defending champions had to work incredibly hard for their only goal. Defending like trojans, Durban Girls’ High boldly stood firm again and again with relentless attacks by College.

It wasn’t until midway through the final that the feisty, intrepid Bulelwa ‘BB’ Mzimela managed to slip one over the line for College. Mzimela was in the right spot at the right time for a pass flying from the right, straight across the goals, finding her outstretched stick near the left post, the ball changed direction. Her tournament winning goal insured that the hardworking College team advance through to the Grand Finals in July, the only team to have made an appearance every year in the nine year history of this tournament.

On the way to the finals, Durban Girls’ College met St Henry’s in the first semi-final. College quickly got into their offensive game with a 3 nil triumph. Goal scorers for College were Amanda Holmes slotting in a flick off a short corner, BB Mzimela knocking in the second off a pass and Pippa Meek capitalising off some messy play in the goal mouth.

In a wonderfully equal yo-yo of a game, Durban Girls’ High School took on Maris Stella in their semi-final. The game bounced between the two goals, with both teams nearly scoring, but magnificent defence on both ends saw the game level with no goals at the conclusion. Being a semi-final the game needed a winner, so it progressed to a penalty shoot-out. Tamika Pillay, Latoya Boon and Tianna Anderson all weaved their magic for Girls’ High and found the back of the box. Maris Stella’s Holly Chellin and Sarah Proctor slotted in their attempts easily, but unfortunately for Maris Stella, Kelsey Wassink’s flick found the pads of Asanda Ncube in goals for Girls’ High, giving the hosts a 3-2 advantage and an opportunity to meet the defending champs.

Stand-in Coach for College, Mike Cullen stated after the victory, “With only 20 minutes, it is always a bit of a challenge, a lottery because one goal against you and you are under pressure. On the whole, I thought our girls played really well, we moved the ball nicely, we managed to score lots of goals. We also did a lot of things that we talk about which from a coaching point of view is pleasing.”

Cullen helped College while their usual coach was away cycling the Cape Town Cycle Tour, shared his favourite moment of the day: “Winning - without a doubt! Cos the team (myself included) were all under an incredible amount of pressure being the only team to have claimed the title of this region,” a supremely chuffed Cullen said.

Being acknowledged for her unfaltering presence with the whistle, Melissa Calitz from St Henry’s was awarded Umpire of the Day.

The fourth team to earn their ticket to the Grand Finals, Durban Girls’ College join the two Pietermaritzburg teams that have already earned their spots. The first team to qualify was St Anne’s College (Pietermaritzburg North Region) followed by Epworth School (Pietermaritzburg Central Region) and then Crawford La Lucia (Durban North Region).

The next regional returns to the 3 Schools Trust for the Durban South Regional on Sunday 7 April, with defending champs, Amanzimtoti High School hosting the tournament. Thereafter, five more regionals remain in the 2019 KZN tournament.

Update – Kingsley Holgate Foundation’s Cape Town to Kathmandu Expedition

Last week Kingsley Holgate and his Cape Town to Kathmandu expedition team realised a dream by finally reaching one of the highest paved roads in the world with their Land Rover Discoverys. With a maximum elevation of 4,714 metres, the Pakistani Karakoram Highway and its treacherous passes is often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World.

It’s here on this ‘Roof of the World’ where the three highest mountain ranges on the planet collide – the Himalayas, the Hindu Kush and the Karakorams. This is the fabled Shangri-La (The Kingdom of Lost Horizons) – a land of snow leopards, bears, apricot orchards, stone-built villages and hardy people. The area plays home to vast glaciers, alpine deserts and 33 of the highest mountains on Earth, like the snow-covered 8,126m peak of Nanga Parbat, Pakistan’s second-highest mountain after the 8,610m ‘Killer Mountain’ of K2, which is only exceeded by Mount Everest.

“For months we’ve dreamed about achieving this major expedition objective,” said Holgate. “It’s a long, fascinating and sometimes arduous journey of mountain passes, tunnels, wash-aways, and landslides. We find ourselves squeezing past colourful, jingling Bedford trucks; the Landys’ tyres just millimetres from the edge of dizzying drops into steep gorges where the green waters of the Indus River tumble and meander. We’ve met police checkpoints and travelled in convoys, all flavoured with the friendliness of the amazingly tough Baltistan people who inhabit this rough mountainous region which through centuries of the Silk Road trade, has linked northern Pakistan to China.”

Near the picturesque Hunza Valley, Kingsley and crew broke away for some tough off-road sections of the ancient Silk Road. It’s yet another high-altitude test for the expedition’s two Discoverys which haven’t missed a beat. The Discovery’s 283mm ground clearance has been key in tackling the rocky conditions, while the multi-mode Terrain Response 2 has allowed the team to adapt the vehicles’ settings to varying terrain – some of which is more easily passable by goats than cars – with a simple turn of a knob.

But the Karakoram Highway will soon be unpassable by any vehicle. A new, faster highway is being built through these mountains by the Chinese to quicken the transportation of goods to the Port of Karachi on the Arabian Sea. The waters of a new dam on the Indus will also flood large sections of the old Karakoram Highway, which when it was built in the 1970s, claimed a life for each of its 883km.

“Land Rovers have taken us from the southern tip of the African continent to the Roof of the World,” concludes Kingsley. “What a great feeling! It’s been a special privilege to travel this iconic road which will one day be only a memory.”

The Cape Town to Kathmandu expedition will now travel south across the Punjab to Lahore in time for the daily military ceremony at Wagah, which marks the sensitive border with India. Then it’s on to New Delhi, the famed Taj Mahal at Agra and onwards again to meet the Ganges at Varanasi en route to the final destination of Kathmandu in the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal.

Under the shadow of the great Mount Everest, the team will ceremoniously empty a symbolic, decorated Zulu calabash of south Atlantic seawater carried all the way Cape Town and will present the expedition’s Madiba Scroll of Peace and Goodwill to representatives of Kathmandu as a symbolic gesture of friendship from the people of South Africa. Hundreds of well-wishers have already added kind-hearted messages to the Scroll along the route, which has successfully crossed southern Africa, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Pakistan and India.

Mix up a 155 year-old farm setting, a stone shed and a dappled expansive garden with the jazzy-blues vocal talent of Tanya Nicolson, accompanied by St John Haw, interspersed with the heart-stopping classical piano talent of concert pianist, Lara Kirsten and you have a Sunday with a Summertime Feel that promises pure magic. 

“Summertime Feels”, a lazy afternoon of good music with great company, takes place on Sunday, December 2 from 1pm, with gates opening at 11am, at Overstone Farm, a working family farm 55km from Pietermaritzburg, 15km beyond Wartburg. Nestled in the sugar belt, Overstone offers a peaceful venue in a number of self-catering accommodation units in the original family homestead.   

St John Haw and Tanya Nicolson met in early 2013, through a mutual friend, and found an immediate connection musically. With St John on piano and Tanya on vocals, they were matched in an unexpected way through a love of their jazz influences but it was really their emotional connection through the music, that came as such a surprise to them both.

Tanya has been on stage professionally since the age of 8, with a background in drama, musical theatre, cabaret, physical theatre, film and TV. Her theatrical credits include playing the lead in David Kramer’s “District Six – The Musical” and many more musical theatre, serious dramas, film and TV roles including directing “Grease” alongside Ian Von Memerty. In 2007 Tanya began pursuing a new found passion for the culinary arts and hospitality which culminated in the opening of an award winning gourmet bistro in 2010 in Hilton; but stumbling upon the innate talents of St John Haw, rekindled the musical fire in Tanya.

 St John Haw is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Pietermaritzburg who has played piano most of his life in a variety of different spheres. Although his talent on the keys comes from somewhere that can only be described as innate and somewhat visceral, St John is also an extremely skilled landscaper with an unbridled passion for gardens, architecture and antiques.

Lara Kirsten is an award winning pianist and performance poet, based in Curry’s Post in the Midlands.  After completing her high school career at the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg, Lara received her BMus and BMus Honours degrees (both cum laude) respectively in 2001 and 2005, at the University of Pretoria. Prof. Joseph Stanford and Dr. Wessel van Wyk were her mentors in solo piano and chamber music respectively. She tour for over two years with the improvising cellist Francois le Roux throughout of SA, Europe and the USA and for the past decade Lara has been active as both a solo and chamber musician. She has played with musicians such as coloratura soprano Linda van Coppenhagen, soprano Gwyneth Lloyd, tenor Sandile Mabaso, clarinetist Morné van Heerden and cellist Wessel Beukes. One of the highlights of her musical career was trekking her piano all the way from her home in the Midlands of KZN to the AfrikaBurn festival (in the Tankwa Karoo of the Northern Cape) where she gave three open-air piano recitals. Concerts in KwaZulu-Natal include two tours with tenor Sandile Mabaso.

As a  special addition to the lazy afternoon of music, is a free yoga session conducted by Alice Richter on the lawns of the historic gardens at Overstone. Alice teaches alignment based Hatha Vinyasa, and beginner to experienced level practitioners are all welcome.

SA INDIAN GANGSTER THRILLER MAYFAIR OPENS TO GREAT REVIEWS

Gangster tale ‘Mayfair’, the fourth film by award-winning director Sara Blecher (‘Ayanda’, ‘Dis Ek Anna’, ‘Otelo Burning’) opened to rave reviews this past weekend. This comes after several sold-out screenings in London.

‘Mayfair’ tells the story of prodigal son Zaid Randera (Ronak Patani) who returns home to Mayfair in Johannesburg, where his overbearing father Aziz (Rajesh Gopie) – a thriving import-exporter and occasional money launderer and loan shark – is facing death threats. Zaid has been unfairly dismissed from his job as an aid worker, and on his return he finds himself living in the shadow of his father and his dodgy dealings. When a murderous rival gang threatens the family’s business, Zaid is forced back into the life he’d hoped to leave behind.

Channel24’s Rozanne Els wrote, ‘The elements of this story are greatly compelling, and Sara Blecher methodically pulls each of these closer together to eventually become a tight and gripping conclusion.’ She called the film ‘a much richer blend of themes than what any genre classification…can  completely encompass.’ She praised Ronak Patani, the British actor who plays Zaid. ‘With genuine commitment, [he takes] the character’s perception of himself as a compassionate, well-intentioned man who is nothing like his father to one of disgust, and resigned to his inevitable fate.’

‘Mayfair’ follows on from the recent success of Indian stories set in South Africa, including ‘Material’, ‘Keeping up with the Kandasamys’ and ‘Broken Promises’.

South Africa Indian community site Indian Spice, said, ‘Blecher delivers a taut, fine-tuned thriller that is guaranteed to keep you on tenterhooks.’

Notably, BBC News visited the bustling suburb of Mayfair, and did a video interview with Blecher, who said that the film reveals a part of Johannesburg seldom seen on screen, and shines a light on a community often side-lined by mainstream popular culture.

In the role of Aziz is Rajesh Gopie, a well-known South African Indian actor, comedian, writer and voice artist who has appeared in such television series as Generations and Zero Tolerance, and is best known for his role in South Africa’s highest grossing film of 2017, ‘Keeping up with the Kandasamys’, a comedy that tells the story of a long-standing rivalry between two families, the Kandasamys and the Naidoos.

Shady businessman and long-standing rival of the Randera family Jalaal is played by Jack Devnarain, who has performed in numerous TV and film productions, including the heist thriller 31 Million Reasons. Devnarain describes his character as ‘a puppet-master dealing in money, power and blood’.

Movie news and reviews site Screen Anarchy praised the film, noting that the crime drama is part of ‘the current wave of high end South African films’, and that ‘Mayfair’ looks at the Muslim-Indian communities of Johannesburg through ‘a tale of conflicted loyalties and escalating violence’.

‘The film explores similar themes to the current Saif Ali Khan headed thriller ‘Sacred Games’, the first Indian Netflix Original web series, which has proved to be a game changer in the Indian entertainment scene,’ says Helen Kuun, MD of Indigenous Film Distribution. ‘The show received a huge thumbs-up from audiences and shot the lights out in India. It explores themes to those at the heart of ‘Mayfair’, including corruption, crime and the dark underworld that exists in almost every urban setting.’

The Big Jazz Jol is Back !

30th edition on October 27 at Centre for Jazz and Popular Music

The ever-popular annual Jazz Jol has a stellar line-up for this year’s edition that takes place at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music, on Saturday, 27 October at 7pm.

Celebrating its 30th year, the Jazz Jol features composer/pianists Burton Naidoo and Sibusiso “Mash” Mashiloane and the much-loved UKZN Big Band.

SAMRO award-winning Durban-born pianist, arranger and composer Burton Naidoo, will lead the UKZN Big Band, and will also perform his much-talked about compositional adventure ‘Our Song’. This work creates a backdrop for iconic speeches of President Nelson Mandela and other famous leaders of South African politics. Written for solo piano and track, the audience can expect speeches from the Rivonia Trial, Praise singing from Sthembile Mlangeni and Zolani Mkhiva at the inauguration, as well as FW De Klerk’s announcement to free Nelson Mandela at Parliament in 1990.

Sibusiso “Mash” Mashiloane, is a prolific young pianist whose academic and performance credentials speak volumes for the kind of passion and discipline he has for music. He tours extensively, has produced three albums in three years, and was recently nominated for the prestigious international Afrima Awards in the categories of best male in Southern Africa and best African Jazz.

Mashiloane is currently doing his PHD focusing on South African composers. He also finds time to teach and organize live music performances with his students focusing on South African composers.  Mashiloane will perform a selection of his own compositions inspired by the South African music landscape.

Speaking of his love for SA music and composers Mashiloane says: “The musicians and composers that inspire me, are the ones that take pride in their identity and are not only driven by their musical skills, but also by their relevance and accuracy. It is so important that we embrace the different characters that our society breeds. If we do not do let our identity influence our music, the significance of being part of a society is lost.”

Mashiloane will perform with Menzi Cele and Zoe The Seed on vocals, Boyi Mokhatla on drums and Qhubekani Mthethwa on bass guitar.

The UKZN Big Band led by Burton Naidoo will perform some old Big Band favourites including Have you Met Miss Jones, Take the 'A' Train, and I've got You Under My Skin.

New arrangements from John Kordalewski, as well as arrangements by students Micale Leon, Phuti Mofakeng, Kgethi Nkotsi and Sinalo Zulu will be featured.  And just to get everyone into a festive spirit the Big Band will perform two Christmas Carols.

As a warm-up and precursor to the annual Jazz Jol, UKZN Jazz Ensemble will perform on 17 and 24 October at 6pm at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music, University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Proceeds from these two concerts as well as the Jazz Jol will go to the Ronnie Madonsela Scholarship that assists disadvantaged jazz students at UKZN with financial aid or support.

As part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of this Scholarship, the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is also proud to announce a legacy project of the release of a double CD of the Piano Passions concert held in Howard College Theatre earlier this year. Singing for 67 Blankets, Wednesday 10th October 2018, Centre for Jazz and Popular Music

The UKZN School of Arts presents 'Singing for 67 Blankets' a Vocal Showcase featuring singers from the UKZN Music Discipline at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music on Wednesday 10th October at 6.00pm. 

 The evening of Song includes a varied programme of Opera, Classical Voice, Popular Music, Jazz, Isicathamiya, solo and ensemble singing. This concert not only provides a platform to showcase talented, diverse musicians in the School of Arts, it also provides an opportunity to make a contribution to the national charity '67Blankets'. Singers in the Music Discipline have contributed in various ways including knitting squares or whole blankets and of course their performances, for the '67 Blankets' campaign. The blankets will be presented to the charity representatives at the concert before being distributed to people and communities in need across the city. 

The concert will include the close-harmony Jazz Vocal group UKZN Voices under the direction of Debbie Mari; the Pop Voice Ensemble led by Durban Theatre personality Anthony Stonier, Opera soloists Wayne Mkhize, Khulekani Miya, Margaret Mfayela and Bulelwa Msane;  Jazz vocalists Menzi Cele, Lwazi Khuzwayo, Nolwazi Dlamini, Nomfundo Cele and Josie Matabola; Pop singers Nobuhle Khuzwayo, Tony Hlangu, Nhlanhla Mthethwa, Nomcebo Luthuli and Minenhle Skhosana; the UKZN Opera Ensemble directed by Lionel Mkhwanazi and the UKZN AMD Isicathamiya Ensemble directed by Nu Luthuli. You can expect to hear Jazz standards such as I Could Write A Book, In a Mellow Tone and Doxy; Pop favourites I’ll Rise Up and Have You Ever; Opera classics including Habanera and Giuseppe Verdi’s Bella Figlia Dell ’Amore alongside South African compositions Mme le ntate and eThekwini by the late Andile Mseleku.

There’ll be CD giveaways, Popup  Society vouchers up for grabs and music for everyone! Please note this concert will run longer than the usual weekly Wednesday CJPM concerts so why not bring your picnic basket along – cash bar available – it is after all an extended mid-week singing celebration!
